Our Story

Food With
A Higher
Purpose

More than a restaurant — Gopal's is a four-decade journey of devotion, community and the simple joy of feeding people well.

1. Little Lonsdale Street (1972)

Gopals began in 1972 as an Hare Krishna outreach on Little Lonsdale Street. After long Harinam kirtans on the streets, devotees and passersby returned hungry, drawn by chanting and community. Kurma Prabhu, the pioneer and head chef, cooked prasadam in a small orange-painted hall, his tireless work in hot kitchens layed Gopals’ foundation for generous, lovingly prepared food.

2. Flinders Lane (1978–1982)

In 1978 Gopals moved to a busy Flinders Lane basement: a proper restaurant and Hare Krishna shop with low tables, a stage for kirtan, and Sunday feasts. Kurma Prabhu led the kitchen as the place grew and voluntary donations were introduced in 1982, keeping the spirit of open hospitality alive.

3. Prahran & Cooking Classes (1980–1981)

A Prahran outpost near Malvern Market added an auditorium and community programs. Kurma Prabhu ran the popular cooking classes there in the early 1980s, drawing large groups and turning culinary outreach into a vibrant cultural exchange.

4. Consolidation & Present Location (1983 to present)

In 1983 operations consolidated: Prahran became Crossways and the Flinders Lane activity moved to Gopals’ current location at 139 Swanston Street, Melbourne. The name “Gopals” now stands for generous prasadam and community warmth, a legacy the restaurant continues to honour.

Food With Purpose

Cooked as an offering

"When food is prepared with love and devotion, it nourishes the body and uplifts the soul."

In the Hare Krishna tradition, our food is sattvic — pure, peaceful and cooked mindfully as a spiritual offering before it ever reaches your plate. It's a philosophy you can taste: clean, vibrant and made entirely without harm to any living being.
